Choléra morbus. Autrefois, on appelait choléra nostras, ou choléra morbus, une gastro-entérite aiguë, provoquée en général par une intoxication due à des aliments infectés, le plus souvent par des germes du genre Salmonella. Elle se manifeste par des vomissements, des crampes abdominales et une diarrhée. Lorsqu'elle survient chez le nourrisson, à la suite d'une infection intestinale, elle se présente sous une forme très brutale, parfois dramatique, et la déshydratation intense qu'entraîne la diarrhée provoque un effondrement de l'état général, autrefois fréquemment mortel. On l'appelait choléra infantile.
